The Punjab Food Authority’s Nutrition Section conducted a nutrition awareness and screening camp in collaboration with Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) in Lahore, catering to over 80 employees. The camp offered assessment tools such as Body Mass Index, body fat percentage, and visceral fat measurements. Attendees received general dietary guidelines and personalized diet plans, including Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for diabetes, hypertension, CVD and overweight conditions.
Findings from the camp revealed prevalent issues of malnourishment and a sedentary lifestyle among participants. The identified causes were attributed to long sitting hours, insufficient physical activity, and irregular meal timings.
For diabetes management, prioritize a balanced diet with controlled carbohydrate intake. Include whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of vegetables. Monitor portion sizes and spread meals throughout the day to help regulate blood sugar levels. Consistency in meal timing is crucial.
In hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD) cases, adopt the DASH diet, emphasizing fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and lean proteins. Limit sodium intake by avoiding processed foods and incorporating heart-healthy fats, such as those found in avocados and nuts.
For individuals with overweight conditions, focus on a calorie-controlled diet with nutrient-dense foods. Include lean proteins, whole grains, and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables. Regular physical activity is key for weight management.
These guidelines serve as a foundation, but it’s essential for individuals to work closely with a nutritionist to tailor recommendations based on their specific health needs and goals.
